Fetal Therapy Board Committee | Overview
Fetal therapy provides in utero treatment and/or surgical correction of congenital anomalies and diseases in a fetus or fetuses. For many pregnant people and their doctors, the necessary treatment or intervention isn’t immediately known or presents unanswered questions, which is why the Boston Children’s Fetal Therapy Board provides a multidisciplinary evaluation of proposed therapies for certain fetal diagnoses. We work alongside pregnant patients, their families, and their prenatal care teams to evaluate fetal therapy options and provide guidance around the best approaches to care.
What is the Fetal Therapy Board?
The Fetal Therapy Board is made up of experts from fetal surgery, maternal-fetal medicine, neonatology, other pediatric sub-specialties, and nursing, as well as social work, pastoral services (spiritual care), the Institutional Review Board, and community members.
The board reviews cases as requested or needed to see if they meet certain criteria or need further review. We also meet regularly to review patient outcomes and their follow-up care.
Our mission
The Fetal Therapy Board works to thoughtfully advance fetal interventions by carefully reviewing proposed fetal therapies that are innovative, but are neither research nor the standard of care. We also strongly advocates for patients, their families, and their fetal care team.
