Before your first visit to the Fetal-Neonatal Neurology Program, we will send you a new patient packet that outlines what you need to bring.

There are two crucial items that we’ll need at your first visit:

  • Please bring the discharge summary you received at the end of your baby’s stay in the neonatal intensive care unit.
  • Please get images from any brain scans that may have been taken (such as head ultrasound, CT scans, and MRIs) on CDs or actual films. Also bring the reports from these scans. We have found that the most effective way to obtain these images is for you to get them in person at the hospital where your child was cared for. (If your child was cared for at Boston Children’s Hospital, we can get them.)

Please also remember to bring all of the information requested in the packet and to fill out the forms. This will help make your first visit more productive.

Please also come with your questions. If you are coming for your first appointment with us, you may have a lot of worries and questions on your mind. Is my baby going to be okay? How is this condition going to affect her long-term? What do we do next? But at the appointment, it can be easy to forget the questions you wanted to ask.

It’s often helpful to ask yourself what you want to get out of the appointment, and to write down your questions ahead of time. Bring the list to your appointment. Your questions are important, and we want to make sure that we answer them and give you the information you need.
