About the Comfort Ability Program

The Comfort Ability Program helps children and adolescents and their parents or caregivers learn how to better manage pediatric chronic pain problems such as headache, stomach pain, nerve pain joint pain, disease related pain, post-surgical pain, or any other kind of ongoing pain. It is directed by Rachael Coakley, PhD, and run by staff psychologists from the Pain Treatment Center at Boston Children's Hospital.

Our approach

The Comfort Ability Program runs workshops that can be done as a one-day in-person intervention or as several virtual telehealth (Zoom) sessions. The workshops include a hands-on introduction to cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) skills such as relaxation, mindfulness and thought restructuring to improve emotional and physical function. The main goals are to provide patients with research-proven skills for managing pain and to provide social and emotional support. Additionally, parents and caregivers in The Comfort Ability Program workshop learn helpful skills for responding to their child's pain, strategies for supporting their child at home and school and how to set up a structured plan to boost their child's overall recovery. Who is eligible for The Comfort Ability Program?

The Comfort Ability Program offers a fun workshop for children and adolescents ages 10 to 17 with persistent pain and their parents or caregivers. It’s important that parents and kids do the workshop together to get the best results. You do not have to be a current patient at Boston Children's Hospital to participate.
