General surgery residents
Interns and senior residents rotate from several General Surgical Training Programs in Boston. A limited number of six-month or full-year positions are also available at the junior level for individuals considering a career in pediatric surgery.
The primary operative experience of the residents is commensurate with their level of training. Junior residents perform cases such as appendectomy, herniorrhaphy, pyloromyotomy, orchidopexy, and circumcision. Senior residents perform more major cases such as pectus excavatum, fundoplication, splenectomy, neonatal obstruction, and lung resections. Operations performed by the general surgery residents are closely supervised by the chief resident, associate chief resident, or the senior staff. In addition to the operative experience, residents gain extensive experience in the perioperative care of infants and children, including those undergoing ECMO and solid organ transplantation.
Supervision
A very close working relationship exists between the senior surgical staff and the resident staff. All senior staff members have offices within the hospital, facilitating close case-by-case and day-to-day interactions between the senior staff and the residents. Senior staff members are assigned on a daily basis as the "on call" surgeon. They are expected to participate in the decision making and the conduct of surgery in all major cases and in the care of critically ill patients.
