Research Overview

Dr. Ma has two main research interests. First, he is interested in developing statistical methods for analyzing high-throughput DNA sequencing data. His statistical innovations have increased the power to detect novel genetic targets for disease prevention, diagnosis, and therapy in genetic association studies.

Second, he collaborates closely with clinician-investigators in clinical research studies to improve our understanding of pediatric disease, with a focus on pediatric cancer and blood disorders. His recent methodological interests include the design of pediatric phase I trials that aim to evaluate the safety profile of new drugs and determine a suitable dose for children.

About the Researcher

Dr. Ma is the Senior Biostatistician at the Experimental Therapeutics/Interventional Trials (ET/IT) Center, and the Lead Biostatistician at the Dana-Farber/Boston Children's Cancer and Blood Disorders Center. His primary role is to provide statistical leadership in collaborative clinical research with clinician-investigators. He is the project co-lead for the Pediatric Patient Informatics Platform, a multi-purpose datamart used for operations, quality, and research purposes in the Division of Hematology/Oncology. He actively mentors medical students, residents, and fellows, as well as junior statisticians in the design and analysis of clinical studies.

Dana-Farber/Boston Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders Center

Dana-Farber/Boston Children's Cancer and Blood Disorders Center is one of the top research centers in the world for pediatric cancers and blood diseases. It brings together laboratory scientists and clinical researchers from Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Boston Children’s Hospital in a single program. We investigate pediatric cancers and non-malignant blood disorders from every angle—from examining cells under the microscope to tracking the effectiveness of current drug regimens using the most advanced molecular methods—so that we can create better treatments for children seen here and around the world.
