Adaptive Dance Program
The Adaptive Dance Program provides an adaptive movement class for children with Down Syndrome and is designed to expose students to a curriculum that aids in the growth of self-confidence and self-esteem.
It is the first collaboration between a prominent U.S. dance company and a leading pediatric hospital to provide movement classes for children with special needs.
Who is eligible to participate?
The program is designed for children ages 7-18 who have Down Syndrome.
When is it held?
Currently in its fourth season, the program consists of two 10-week sessions held in the fall and the spring.
What does the program teach?
The goal is for participants to develop an appreciation for dance and music and to improve their movement patterns, while increasing focus and creativity.
Participants enjoy a cheerful, positive, supportive environment led by Boston Ballet dance instructors, with assistance from Children's Hospital Physical Therapists and volunteers.
How do I sign up my child?
Contact Michelina Cassella at 617-355-7223.
The Departments of Physical Therapy and Developmental Medicine at Boston Children's Hospital have been awarded grant funding to expand the program and study the potential positive outcomes.
There are 24 Adaptive Dance Program participants enrolled in this study.
The team of physical therapists who care for the Boston Ballet dancers also frequently lecture and teach on injury prevention for the Alvin Ailey Summer Program in Boston.
Physical Therapy for the Performing Arts
The physical therapy department, in conjunction with the Department of Sports Medicine, also provides consultation and treatment for Broadway touring companies when they are performing in Boston.
