Research | Overview

Dr. Nadeem Y. Karimbux, DMD, MMSc, is the resident clinician in our Periodontics Program at Boston Children’s Hospital and an Associate Professor at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM). Dr. Karimbux and his colleagues at HSDM are currently involved in clinical research studies that focus on the connection between periodontal diseases and systemic health.

One study suggests that people with periodontal diseases are at a higher risk for getting cardiovascular disease due to the fact that the inflammatory burden in the oral cavity could potentially spread to other parts of the body. Another study looks at pregnant women who have periodontitis and their potential risk for having pre-term low birth weight babies. Dr. Karimbux and his colleagues are examining the connection between diabetic patients and their susceptibility to developing periodontitis at the Joslin Diabetes Center, the largest diabetes center in the world.
