Boston Children’s advanced fellowship in preventive cardiology aims to promote the clinical and academic training of physicians specializing in pediatric preventive cardiology. The fellowship also supports and advances clinical research on the evaluation and treatment of cardiovascular risk during childhood.

Trainees have traditionally completed a fellowship in pediatric cardiology before participating in this 12-month advanced fellowship. Accepted trainees will be immersed in our active clinical, research, and teaching environments with the goal of substantially augmenting their clinical and research skills. A second year of training will be considered for applicants who are interested in pursuing a career with a major focus in independent research. Trainees may elect to pursue advanced research methodological training; in general, the cost of this training is covered by the trainee.

Advanced training in pediatric preventive cardiology is achieved through hands-on training, seeing patients, and participating in research and educational sessions. The advanced Preventive Cardiology fellow is expected to participate in didactic and clinical conferences — including Preventive Cardiology Clinic research meetings — lead monthly journal clubs, attend monthly Preventive Cardiology rounds, as well as take advantage of other learning opportunities in the Department of Cardiology and Longwood Medical Area (such as Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health’s CVD Epi Friday Forum). Additional learning opportunities can be explored in areas such as the management of patients with markedly elevated body mass index, Kawasaki disease, coronary anomalies, and non-invasive vascular testing. Previous trainees have had joint training experiences with the Framingham Heart Study. In the past, trainee time has been divided between research (70 percent) and clinical care (30 percent).
