Brain Injury Center

At the Boston Children’s Hospital Brain Injury Center, we welcome your referrals of patients with a known head or brain injury.

We encourage providers to inquire about referrals through our intake email: braininjurycenter@childrens.harvard.edu.

Our concussion clinics are for any patient who has had a recent concussion from any injury.

Sports Medicine Clinic

The Sports Concussion Clinic is for patients 8 and older with a sports-related concussion or recent concussion and who are also actively involved in sports. We provide a second opinion for patients who have a prolonged or complicated recovery and we can care for any concussion patient you don’t feel equipped or comfortable managing.

Multidisciplinary Concussion Clinic

Our Multidisciplinary Concussion Clinic is for patients 4 to 19 with long-term problems or prolonged recovery following a concussion. We also provide second opinions. In this clinic, we see patients who:

• Have symptoms that limit their ability to participate in day-to-day activities
• Have at least two domain-specific symptoms (balance difficulty, dizziness, ringing in the ears or hearing changes, increased emotional symptoms, or visual problems such as difficulty focusing or double or blurry vision) lasting longer than four weeks from diagnosed concussion
• Have headaches for longer than a month, with two of the domain-specific symptoms listed above

Traumatic Brain Injury Multidisciplinary Clinic

This clinic is appropriate for patients with long-term problems or prolonged recovery following a moderate to severe brain injury. We also provide second opinions.

• Diagnoses include intracranial hemorrhages and axonal injuries from traumas, such as motor vehicle accidents, gunshot injuries, and non-accidental trauma.
• We also treat patients who have had a hospital stay for brain injury or acute rehabilitation post-hospitalization.

Boston Children’s Hospital offers an annual Sports Concussion, Traumatic Brain, and Spine Injury Conference, held every spring in Boston.

This conference has been running since 2004 and focuses on the basic science and clinical management of traumatic brain injury (TBI), sport-related concussions, and spinal cord injuries.

Through lectures, panel presentations, small group discussions, Q&As, and case reviews, participants will gain the practical knowledge and skills needed to diagnose, treat, and manage the full spectrum of TBI, sports-related concussions, and spine injury during both the acute and chronic phases of recovery.

Boston Children’s Hospital is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
