ABOUT THE RESEARCHER

OVERVIEW

Dr. van der Velden is the Program Director for the Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Fellowship and the Medical Director of the International Medical Service. She is an Associate in Critical Care Medicine at Boston Children’s Hospital and Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology, Critical Care and Pain Medicine. She also serves as the Director for Medical Education for the Division of Critical Care Medicine, a role in which she oversees educational activities for the Division of Critical Care Medicine. Dr van der Velden currently serves as the Chair of the Program Director’s Committee for the Society of Critical Care Medicine.

Dr. van der Velden’s primary academic focus is in the area of teaching and educational leadership. She is involved in research activities looking at the pediatric critical care training environment and workforce. Dr. van der Velden is also interested in how safety and efficiency initiatives drive value-based care for pediatric patients.

BACKGROUND

Dr. van der Velden received her medical doctorate from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine as well as a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Kentucky. She completed pediatric residency at the Boston Combined Residency Program and pediatric critical care fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital.
