Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Interpretable and Fair Machine Learning for Clinical Decision Support

The Clarity- and Virtue-guided Algorithms (CAVA) Lab at Boston Children's Hospital / Harvard Medical School is seeking a post-doctoral research fellow to advance the interpretability and fairness of machine learning (ML) models deployed in critical healthcare settings. The fellow will join a multi-disciplinary team of computer scientists, informaticists, clinicians, engineers and bioethicists to develop and assess clinical prediction algorithms and advance our understanding of the behavior of machine learning models deployed in health settings.

The fellow will help us think critically about how machine learning methods affect clinical practice and outcomes; in particular, 1) the conditions under which ML provides or fails to provide insight into disease pathologies, and 2) the conditions under which ML exacerbates or mitigates treatment and outcome disparities between patient subgroups.

Prediction models are an increasingly important technology in the digital health landscape, and can produce large-scale changes in health care via their interactions with patients, clinicians, and hospital operations. This postdoctoral fellowship provides an opportunity to study these issues more deeply in order to improve our ability to diagnose and intervene in a more trustworthy and equitable way.

The fellowship includes an academic appointment at Harvard Medical School, as well as a hospital appointment at Boston Children’s Hospital. This position provides an excellent opportunity for the Research Fellow to work within a multidisciplinary research team to explore advanced areas in health information technology. CHIP is home to 20 faculty working at the forefront of research areas extending beyond clinical prediction algorithms to domains like clinical NLP, digital epidemiology, clinical genomics, and app ecosystems for health records.   • PhD degree in computer science, information science, biomedical informatics, data mining, engineering, applied mathematics, or a closely related field.
  • A track record of high-quality research that demonstrates the ability to independently identify important research topics and carry out experiments.
  • Candidates with strong experience in machine learning, preferably both in the assessment of ML algorithms in data science applications and in the development of novel methods.
  • Experience and familiarity with the machine learning literature on interpretability and fairness

CHIP, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School and a collaborating program of the Harvard Medical School Department of Biomedical Informatics, is recruiting postdoctoral fellows. Founded in 1994, CHIP is a multidisciplinary applied research and education program. Biomedical informatics has become a major theme and methodology for biomedical science, health care delivery, and population health, involving high-dimensional modeling and understanding of patients from the molecular to the population levels. We design information infrastructure for medical decision making, diagnosis, care redesign, public health management, and re-imagined clinical trials. The field is inherently interdisciplinary, drawing on traditional biomedical disciplines, the science and technology of computing, data science, biostatistics, epidemiology, decision theory, omics, implementation science, and health care policy and management. Candidates should have strong quantitative backgrounds.

Over the past two decades, the program has trained a mix of MDs and PhDs. More than 90 percent have gone on to receive independent funding in faculty positions in academic medicine.

Program Structure
Fellows in the training program work toward independence in two interrelated phases:

  1. Mentored research project: fellows will be mentored by a faculty member of choice and will select a research topic.
  2. Formal course work: trainees may have the option of formal coursework. The Program Director and faculty mentor work with the fellow to tailor the curriculum based on the skills required for the fellow’s research project and long-term objectives. Often, this can lead to coursework at the Harvard Department of Biomedical Informatics or the Harvard School of Public Health. Many projects have an emphasis on pediatric emergency and acute care.

Columbia University Medical Center, Postdoctoral Research Scientist

Postdoctoral position: Genetics of Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia in a Zebrafish Model

The Institute for Pediatric Urology Research Laboratory at Weill Cornell Medical College seeks an outstanding postdoctoral fellow for research seeking to further our understanding of the  genetics of Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH), an autosomal recessive disease, resulting in inherited  enzymatic deficiencies in cortisol synthesis.

The most common form of CAH is a deficiency in  CYP21A2 (21-hydroxylase ), accounting for over 90% of all cases. More than 100 unique mutations have been found in CAH. In Classic CAH, there is a general correlation between genotype and phenotype; however, the clinical manifestations of nonclassic disease are quite variable, suggesting that other factors (genetic, epigenetic or environmental) may affect the phenotypic expression. The current project will be focused on using the zebrafish model to study the complex genetics of CAH. 

The Division of Pediatric Urology at Weill Cornell has been designated a “Comprehensive  Center for Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia” by the CARES Foundation. As such, we are the  premier clinical center in the US for surgical and medical management of CAH patients. The  studies described here will enhance our understanding of CAH and contribute to improved  patient care. These experiments will be done in collaboration with laboratories at Weill  Cornell that have expertise using zebrafish to model human disease.

Candidates should have a PhD or MD, with a background in molecular genetics.  Additional expertise in zebrafish biology or endocrinology is preferred, but not required. Science Program Manager, Boston Children's Hospital

The Scientific Program Manager works as part of a dynamic professional team that reports to the Director of the Translational Neuroscience Center (TNC) at Boston Children’s Hospital. The specific duties of the Scientific Program Manager are to engage with leading neuroscience faculty and other TNC staff in the development of both basic science and clinical research projects and to oversee the process of generating proposals from concept development, to identification of appropriate federal and nonfederal funding sources, to writing and editing proposals. About the Translational Neuroscience Center:
The Translational Neuroscience Center (TNC) at Boston Children’s Hospital provides a unique environment for physicians and scientists dedicated to improving the lives of children with brain disorders through inter-disciplinary collaborations based on the latest scientific discoveries. Postdoc in the Division of Infectious Diseases/Department of Medicine at Boston Children’s Hospital

The Levy Laboratory is the focal point of the Precision Vaccines Program at Boston Children’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School. The Program employs cutting edge technologies to understand age-specific features of immune responses to inform development of vaccines tailored for optimal safety and immunogenicity towards distinct populations. Postdoctoral Fellowship in Vascular Biology and Genetics at Harvard Medical School

The D’Amato Lab of the Vascular Biology Program at Boston Children’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School is seeking a highly motivated post-doctoral researcher to study the genetic control of ocular angiogenesis.

The project investigates candidate genes found to control angiogenesis in the mouse eye. These candidate genes were identified through genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of inbred mouse strains and further validated in zebrafish. Duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Participating in scientific group meetings, strategic planning, grant writing, and publications;
  • Assisting principal investigator in managing personnel, projects, and research infrastructure;
  • Supervising research technician staff and routine laboratory operations such as ordering/receiving, inventory, vivarium coverage, and special projects;
  • Liaison to institutional officials/offices including laboratory and radiation safety, research operations, human resources, animal welfare, facilities and maintenance, occupational health and safety, sponsored projects, public affairs, government affairs, intellectual property, general counsel, and fund raising (Foundation and Trust);
  • Recruitment and mentoring of research and administrative staff;
  • Generation and maintenance of regulatory approvals including human subjects (IRB), laboratory animals (IACUC), biosafety (IBC), and human embryonic stem cells (ESCRO);
  • Operational understanding of standard laboratory equipment including freezers, tissue culture hoods, incubators, FACS machines, microscopes, and computers among others;
  • Maintenance of publication-related reporting and deposition requirements including PubMedCentral, NIHMS, and MyNCBI;
  • Monitoring of laboratory e-mail account and responding as needed to inquiries regarding available positions, tissue donation, reagents requests, and other areas;
  • Maintenance of laboratory website (experience with Dreamweaver, Photoshop and Illustrator helpful);
  • Drafting and review of sections of grant funding applications and progress reports pertinent to budget justification, vertebrate animals, human subjects, facilities/infrastructure, and key personnel;
  • Editing of manuscripts, funding applications, and other laboratory-related submissions;
  • Strategic planning regarding capital equipment requisitions, purchases, and space allocation;
  • Ability to contribute to ongoing research projects as needed;


  • Advanced Degree; MD or PhD in a related discipline
  • At least 5 years of post-doctoral research experience
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Stem Cell Scientist

Location: South San Francisco, CA, USA

Summary: Senti Bio is seeking talented stem cell biologists to contribute to our early stage projects, including the translation of novel technologies, protocol/process development, and generation of pre-clinical data on key disease indications related to engineering of human stem cells.   • Plan, perform, and interpret scientific experiments in a laboratory setting
  • Provide technical expertise and leadership in multiple parallel projects

  • Stay current with advanced molecular methods, scientific literature, and participate in ideation and decision making meetings
  • Lead and propose “mini-projects” as needed, such as assessment of novel methods or applications
  • Assist in milestone planning, budgeting, and team building/training


  • Ph.D. or equivalent with expertise in stem cell biology or cell engineering
  • At least 2 years of stem cell engineering (ESC, iPSC, MSC, HSC), preferably for therapeutic applications
  • Proficient with cell culture, cell analysis, and flow cytometry and analysis
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a multi-functional team
  • Experience with in vivo animal studies a plus
  • Prior experience in a startup or industry role in therapeutic drug development a plus
