Professional History

Dr. Barbara Sampson is the forensic and cardiovascular pathologist for the Robert's Program on Sudden Unexpected Death in Pediatrics at Boston Children’s Hospital. She also consults in these subspecialty areas. Previously, she served as Vice Chair of Pathology for Strategic Initiatives and Academic Affairs and Professor in the Department of Pathology, Molecular and Cell Based Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. She was the Chief Medical Examiner of the City of New York from 2013-20 and was the first woman appointed to lead the agency.

Over twenty years ago she established the city’s molecular genetics laboratory focusing on causes of sudden death in both children and adults. This is still the only lab of its kind within a medical examiner's office. She has been a Trustee of the American Board of Pathology since 2017. She served as President of the Society of Cardiovascular Pathology and is a member of the National Association of Medical Examiners, the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, and the American Academy of Forensic Sciences. Dr. Sampson has published widely on forensic pathology, cardiovascular pathology, and microbiology, and serves as an Associate Editor of the journal Cardiovascular Pathology.
