Residents attend a variety of daily teaching conferences including grand rounds, epilepsy and neuroradiology conferences, EEG and EMG teachings, case conferences, and resident-led journal club.

Neurology inpatient rounds (twice daily): The general neurology inpatient attending makes teaching rounds on the neurology inpatient floor with the chief resident, junior resident, pediatric rotator(s), and medical student(s).

Epilepsy inpatient rounds (twice daily): The epilepsy attending makes teaching rounds on the epilepsy inpatient service with the epilepsy fellow, junior resident, pediatric rotator(s), and medical student(s).

Critical care neurology rounds (twice daily): The critical care attendings make teaching rounds on the Boston Children’s Hospital Medical, Surgical, and Cardiac ICUs, as well as the NICUs of Boston Children’s Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center with the neurocritical care residents.

Chief rounds (weekly): A case or topic relevant to active cases on the neurology or epilepsy service is presented by the residents and discussed with one of the department chiefs or directors in detail after morning rounds.

Core curriculum (twice weekly): Neurologists from across the Department of Neurology (clinical neurology, epilepsy and clinical neurophysiology, and neuroscience) contribute to this twice-weekly course. The curriculum addresses fundamental topics of pediatric neurology and includes basic science topics discussed in close proximity to clinical topics with which they intersect.

Neurophysiology conference (weekly): Epilepsy attendings give presentations on various aspects of neurophysiology and epilepsy, and discuss techniques of EEG reading. Residents and members of the Epilepsy service attend.

Neuropathology conference (weekly): The neuropathology division presents didactic lectures on clinical neuropathology. Cases are presented and discussed, and specimens are examined. A brain cutting is scheduled about once a month. This conference is attended by the neurologist-in-chief, the training program director, residents on CH rotations, the ward attending physician, and interested neurology faculty.

Neuroradiology conference (weekly): All neurology inpatients and consults seen during the week on neurology inpatient and consult services are reviewed with the residents by members of the Division of Neuroradiology. Interesting cases are often brought by members of the department and then discussed. This conference is an opportunity to review complex cases in a teaching format and is attended by the chief of service, residents on CH rotations, the ward attending physician, and interested neurology faculty. Recently, neurosurgical and neurogenetics session were added to this conference.

Neuro-oncology radiology conference (weekly): This conference is an opportunity to review complex neuroradiology, oncology, and neurology cases in a teaching format, and is attended by oncology and neurology residents, neurology, and oncology faculty.

Epilepsy surgery conference (weekly): Neurophysiology fellows present patients being considered for epilepsy surgery to epilepsy attendings, neurosurgeons, and residents. Longwood residents are welcome to attend this conference.

Clinical epilepsy conference (weekly): This weekly lecture series consists of comprehensive coverage of clinical epilepsy, including pathophysiology, diagnostic aspects, clinical manifestations, therapeutic aspects, and comorbidity. There are also basic EEG lectures geared toward neurology residents. The conference is attended regularly by the neurology residents and by the epilepsy fellows.

Grand rounds (weekly): Held at Harvard Institutes of Medicine, organized by Partners, BIDMC, and Children’s chief residents.

Morbidity and mortality (monthly): The conference combines teaching of core skills for interpreting evidence for the treatment of individual patients with an introduction to key public population health topics.

Journal club (monthly): This club is open to staff, residents, fellows, and invited guests. One recently published paper relevant to the field of child neurology is reviewed in depth each month.

Neuro-oncology protocol conference (monthly): Representatives from oncology, radiation medicine, neurosurgery, neurology, neuropsychology, and pathology meet to discuss protocols for brain tumor management. Interested residents and fellows may attend.

Quality, safety, and improvement science (quarterly): The Department of Neurology is a renowned leader in quality improvement and care integration. Residents develop competencies in these areas through the experiential quality, safety, and implementation science curriculum. Resident-led QSIS projects have contributed to major improvements in patient care.
