Your Visit | Overview
The type of visit your child has will depend on his or her specific condition and which clinic he or she is visiting.
Concussion clinics
Our two concussion clinics provide diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care for children who have had a recent concussion. Our clinicians also provide recommendations on when to return to school, play, and work. We can also provide testing to measure the child’s cognitive (thinking) function and reaction time.
- The Sports Medicine Concussion Clinic, 617-355-3501, 319 Longwood Ave., Boston (across from Boston Children’s main entrance): This clinic is run by the Division of Sports Medicine and cares for patients ages 8 and older who have had a recent sports-related concussion or who have had a recent concussion and are involved in sports. Our team of experts delivers cutting-edge care for concussions, as well as concussion prevention and recovery education for athletes and their families.
- Neurology Department and Brain Injury Center, 617-355-2490, 300 Longwood Ave., Boston (on the 11th floor of the Fegan building): The neurology department provides evaluation and treatment for children who have had a recent concussion that is not related to sports.
Multidisciplinary Concussion Clinic
This clinic is for children ages 4 to 19 who are having long-term symptoms or problems after a concussion. Our team of specialists provides comprehensive evaluation and ongoing treatment.
The Multidisciplinary Concussion Clinic is held the first Tuesday of every month at our Boston Children’s satellite clinic, 9 Hope Ave., Waltham.
Your child’s visit at the clinic will last about six hours. You should bring snacks and drinks (such as Gatorade or water) for your child. Please arrive 15 minutes before your appointment to complete paperwork.
During the visit, your child will meet with six different clinicians, including:
- otolaryngologist (ear, nose, and throat specialist)
- neurologist/sports medicine
- physical therapist
- psychologist
- ophthalmologist and optometrist (eye specialists)
After the visit, the clinicians will meet to discuss the best treatment for your child and come up with a follow-up plan. They may also suggest further testing.
Traumatic Brain Injury Multidisciplinary Clinic
This clinic is for children ages 4 and older who have long-term problems after a moderate to severe brain injury. This clinic offers comprehensive evaluation and management by a team of specialists.
The Traumatic Brain Injury Multidisciplinary Clinic is held on the fourth Thursday of every month at Boston Children’s Hospital main campus, 300 Longwood Ave., Boston, on the 11th floor of the Fegan building.
Your child’s visit at the clinic will last about two and a half hours. Please plan to arrive 15 minutes before your appointment to complete paperwork.
During the visit, your child will meet with three different clinicians:
- neurologist
- neuropsychologist
- neuro-physiatrist
After the visit, the clinicians will meet to discuss the best treatment for your child and come up with a follow-up plan. They may also suggest further testing.
