For Families

The Hale Family Center for Families staff is here to help you while your child is being treated at Boston Children’s Hospital. We offer a variety of free services just for families and we welcome you to join us for any — or all — of these healing and relaxing services.

Our Family Wellness Program practitioners and teachers have professional training and hold certifications in the following areas of practice:

Reiki: Reiki is an ancient Japanese healing technique used for stress reduction and relaxation. During this treatment, the Reiki practitioner places his or her hands on or over your body, helping the mind and body enter a state of greater relaxation and peacefulness. In our experience, family members generally   report a decrease in feelings of stress and increased well-being after a Reiki session. We offer private one-on-one Reiki sessions. The treatment lasts about a half hour.

Meditation: Meditation is a practice that has been used for centuries to help quiet and calm the mind. You’ll sit quietly for a period of about 20 minutes. During this time, you should slowly feel more peaceful and relaxed. Meditation also helps to reduce stress and anxiety. We often lead group meditations in the hospital chapel, but they are not religious.
Gentle Yoga: Yoga is a physical, mental, and spiritual (not religious) practice that calms the mind and body using different poses, exercises, breathing and meditation. Our yoga teachers run a group class that is slow-paced, relaxing and easy for people of all ages and physical abilities.

Massage: Our certified massage therapists focus on massaging common places where you usually hold stress, like the back, neck, arms and shoulders. You keep your clothes on for this massage and lay face down on a professional massage table. Sessions last about half hour.

Zumba: This fun, aerobic workout mixes fast and slow music with dance. Our Zumba teacher plays all kinds of music, such as Latin, salsa, reggae and rumba to make a lively, positive environment. No dance experience is needed!
