Philosophy of Care

I’ve always had a passion for medicine, although after college I had a brief career as a junior high school English teacher and swim team coach.

After working closely with young people as teacher and coach, I knew pediatrics was my calling. I became fascinated with pediatric cardiology while in medical school, and an elective rotation as a student at BCH sealed the deal – I had found the field that would engage, fascinate, and challenge me my entire career. One of the best parts of being a pediatric cardiologist is the long-term relationships you build with patients and families, to help and share in the best of times and in the most challenging of times as well. As Director of our Fellowship Training Program, I get to mentor and coach our future colleagues in the field; working with our amazing trainees is one of the great joys of my career.

Dr. Brown attended Williams College and subsequently Harvard Medical School, and completed pediatric residency, pediatric cardiology fellowship, and a 4th year fellowship in Non-invasive Imaging at Boston Children’s Hospital. As staff in the Non-invasive Imaging Division, his primary interests include transthoracic, transesophageal, and fetal echocardiography in the management of congenital heart disease, with special interest in single ventricle heart disease and congenital aortic stenosis; he also attends on the inpatient cardiology ward. Dr. Brown has a longstanding interest in teaching, and has completed two fellowship programs in Medical Education through the Academy for Teaching and Learning at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Brown became Director of the Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship Training Program in 2011, and is currently President of the Society of Pediatric Cardiology Training Program Directors; he is a member of the BCH Education Strategy Task Force. Dr. Brown serves as the cardiology liaison at Boston Children’s Hospital for pediatric cardiologists in New Hampshire and Vermont, directs a quarterly congenital cardiology CME series for New England cardiologists, and is co-founder of the New England Congenital Cardiology Association, a regional collaborative network of pediatric cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, and allied professionals throughout New England. He is currently serving on the Leadership Task Force of the National Pediatric Cardiology Quality Improvement Collaborative and is Physician Leader of the BCH Heart Center Interstage Program for patients with single ventricle heart disease.
