Senior Fellowship Acute Pediatric Congenital Cardiac Care | Overview

The senior clinical fellowship in Acute Pediatric/Congenital Cardiac Care at Boston Children’s Hospital is designed to prepare pediatric cardiologists for an academic and clinical career focused on inpatient cardiology. We aim to train motivated fellows to become leaders in the field of acute care cardiology. This 12-month training program will accept one fellow per year.

Our inpatient cardiac unit comprises a large and diverse patient population. There are currently 2,400 discharges per year, anticipated to increase substantially with the opening of the new Benderson Family Heart Center building in 2022, which includes 96 acute and intensive cardiac beds. This environment provides abundant opportunity for the evaluation and management of complex and high acuity patients.

The senior fellow will spend six months as the supervising physician for the inpatient medical care teams, with support from attending cardiology staff managing acutely ill cardiac patients and leading a multidisciplinary team. The remaining six months will largely be tailored to the individual needs of the trainee and will include subspecialty inpatient electives (electrophysiology, adult congenital heart disease, pulmonary hypertension) along with dedicated time with our advanced cardiac therapies (ACT) and ventricular assist device teams.

The senior fellow will have a critical role in clinical research, quality improvement, and the educational initiatives of the Division of Inpatient Cardiology. The senior fellow will actively participate in the didactic and clinical conferences offered throughout the Benderson Family Heart Center and will lead the monthly inpatient M&M and journal club conferences. Development of an educational portfolio and participation in QI initiatives on the unit is expected. The senior fellow will take an active role in the teaching of pediatric residents, medical students, and categorical cardiology fellows through case-based learning and simulation. Support from attending cardiology staff will be provided for all research, QI, and education projects.
