Sinus problems can significantly impact your child's quality of life. The physicians of the Sinus Surgery Program at Boston Children's Hospital handle all types of sinus problems ranging from simple infections to complex tumors.

Conditions we treat include:

  • Acute and chronic sinusitis of bacterial, fungal or allergic etiology
  • Nasal polyps
  • Turbinate and adenoid enlargement (hypertrophy)
  • Septal deviation and other anatomical causes of nasal obstruction
  • Congenital anomalies of the nasal airway
  • Benign and malignant tumors of the nose and sinuses

In children, the most common manifestations of sinus problems include the following:

  • Nasal drainage (rhinorrhea)
  • Nasal obstruction
  • Cough due to postnasal drip
  • Facial pressure or pain
  • Facial swelling

A comprehensive management plan will be developed depending on the cause of your child's sinus problem. Because sinus problems can have multiple causes, we commonly work with our colleagues in related specialties at Boston Children's Hospital such as Allergy & Immunology and Pulmonology.

Some children with sinus problems require surgery. The majority of sinus surgical procedures are performed through the nose without external skin incisions. Such endoscopic sinus surgery is a common procedure at our center. Boston Children's has the most advanced radiologic imaging and surgical equipment available to make such procedures as thorough and safe as possible for your child. The extent of surgery is always tailored to your child's condition. Our goal is to make you and your family as comfortable as possible with respect to any procedure which needs to be performed.

We are grateful to have been ranked #1 on U.S. News & World Report's list of the best children's hospitals in the nation for the third year in a row, an honor we could not have achieved without the patients and families who inspire us to do our very best for them. Thanks to you, Boston Children's is a place where we can write the greatest children's stories ever told.”
