Division of Perioperative Anesthesia | Educational Curriculum

In addition to the broad based clinical training, the Pediatric Anesthesia Fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital relies heavily on a strong didactic and simulation based educational platform.

The didactic program is held in accordance to the Perioperative Anesthesia Conference Series, consisting of several CME credit, Category 1 eligible courses. To view more information regarding our department’s morning conference series, please click here: Clinician Resources

In addition to the Perioperative Anesthesia Morning Conference Series, there are several educational events designed specifically for a Pediatric Anesthesia Fellowship-level audience:

Pediatric Anesthesia Fellow Journal Club (Evenings Monthly)

Fellows review one or more peer-reviewed papers in relation to specific, relevant areas of clinical practice. Critically guided discussions are focused on research methodologies including strengths, weaknesses, and indications for the methodological choice. In addition, common statistical research methods are reviewed, and translational applications are considered, when appropriate.

Fellow Seminar in Pediatric Anesthesia (Thursdays, 6:30-7am)

Running concurrently with the more basic resident-level conference (Basic Principles), this course is formatted similarly to the ABA examination. The course intends to develop the requisite knowledge, judgment, and skills suitable for assuming independent responsibility for the care of pediatric patients, serving as an expert in the field of pediatric anesthesia, functioning as the leader of a pediatric anesthesia care team, and meeting with the public and professional medical population at large with regard to pediatric anesthesia. Largely in the format of oral examinations, the focus is on the ability to explain the rationale behind the choices involved in the care of pediatric patients. Standard American Board of Anesthesiology format is used, with a guided questions and additional topics.

Wellness Curriculum

Topics such as burnout, stress management and mindfulness are not standard to medical education and, as such, are likely deficient in many trainees. The Comprehensive Wellness Curriculum hinges on three major concepts: education & awareness of wellness resources, providing informal and formal support, and promoting healthy lifestyles & building resilience. It is a monthly lecture series available as a general department lecture and in addition has a specific monthly focus group for the Fellows.

Simulations

The Pediatric Anesthesia Fellowship includes several simulation –based learning opportunities:

Required:

MOCA-based Simulation Modules: 2 full-day sessions

ORL Simulation: Specific to ORL patients

Non-compulsory:

(Scheduled based on rotation assignments & availability)

CRICO Simulation: Series of half-day, surgery-specific simulations
