Regular eye exams can help catch problems and prompt treatment before a child's brain develops workarounds.

As a newborn, your child will receive a general eye health screening in the hospital nursery. An eye doctor should examine premature newborns and newborns with eye irregularities.

From ages one to three, children should receive regular eye health screenings with their pediatrician during wellness checkups. Visual acuity tests (identifying letters or images of varying sizes from a distance) may be offered to children at the age of three. For little ones, try bringing a favorite stuffed toy or hold them in your lap to distract them during eye exams.

Vision alignment checks may begin around age five during your child's wellness visits. An eye doctor should examine children who fail any tests.

Once your child is age six and older, vision screenings will continue at school and with their pediatrician. Children with prescription glasses should receive annual check-ups with an eye doctor.

Posted @withregram • @bchprimarycarealliance Starting a family? Recently located? It’s worth researching and meeting with potential pediatricians. Here are a few things to consider as you search:

⏰ Hours of operation that fit your schedule
📍Distance from your home
🏥 Relationships with hospitals and specialists
💬 Office culture and communication style

Selecting a pediatrician can be daunting, but beginning your search as early as possible will give you the chance to make an informed decision without having to feel rushed. If you're wondering where to begin, the Boston Children’s Primary Care Alliance is a great place to start!
