Boston Children's Hospital is a leading destination for the treatment of digestive disorders and liver diseases in children. Our department - ranked number one in pediatric gastroenterology in the United States by U.S. News & World Report - is the largest of its kind in the world, scheduling more than 40,000 patient visits and performing more than 4,000 surgeries and procedures each year.
We offer world-class care for complex conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, short bowel syndrome, and eosinophillic gastrointestinal disorders. Our hepatology division, meanwhile, specializes in treating liver disease and has performed more than 240 liver transplants in children over the past 30 years.
Our specialized programs provide innovative, personalized care not available at other hospitals. We offer a wide variety of therapies and procedures -- from bariatric surgery to a growth and nutrition program -- and have a new state-of-the-art endoscopy and motility unit.
Just as important, we offer compassionate support to your child and family at every step of the way. Our entire team -- doctors, nurses, and support staff -- works together to coordinate your child's care, make your family feel comfortable, and ensure that your experience is as smooth and stress-free as possible.
Conditions We Treat
The hospital's gastroenterology department comprises more than 15 specialized clinical programs that treat the full range of digestive and liver disorders in children, including:
- Digestive disorders. Celiac disease, motility disorders, eosinophilic gastrointestinal disease, milk protein allergy (allergic colitis).
- Colon and intestinal diseases. Inflammatory bowel disease, ulcerative colitis, short bowel syndrome, familial adenomatous polyposis.
- Liver problems. Liver disease, acute liver failure, liver tumors, gallbladder and bile duct disorders, Wilson's disease, Alagille syndrome, biliary atresia.
Our Family-Centered Approach
We provide comprehensive, family-centered care delivered by a collaborative team of experts. In addition to our highly trained gastroenterology physicians, surgeons, and nurses, our staff includes a wide range of other specialists -- including anesthesiologists, social workers, and dietitians -- who develop an individual care plan to meet the unique medical and emotional needs of your child.
We know the family is the most important source of emotional support for children, and that's why we view family members as a vital component of each child's healthcare team. Families are always welcome on the patient care unit and are encouraged to comfort and soothe their children. And when they're away from the units, family members may call at any time to speak with the child's nurse.
Research and Innovation
Our physicians and researchers are currently leading or collaborating in more than 25 clinical trials for conditions including inflammatory bowel disease and childhood liver disease, giving your child extraordinary access to the latest science and experimental treatments.
Likewise, our specialized gastroenterology procedure unit is leading the way in the field of surgery and diagnostic imaging techniques. We are one of the only pediatric programs in the country to offer endoscopic ultrasound and capsule endoscopy. We're also involved in cutting-edge studies in a number of areas, including chronic esophageal disease, polyposis, motility disorders, and inflammatory bowel disease.
