Patient safety at Children’s Hospital Boston
A message to referring providers

Over the course of the past several months, Children’s Hospital Boston has been working closely with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health regarding several widely publicized cases involving patients with complex medical needs. Our response to DPH’s report on these cases includes a detailed plan of corrections and improvements, many of which have already been implemented. DPH has accepted that plan as assuring safe care.

We are currently in the process of developing better coordination and communication between services and among attending physicians, residents and other clinical staff responsible for the care of patients with complex, multi-disciplinary medical needs.

Each year, the outstanding clinicians at Children’s Hospital Boston provide quality care with exceptional outcomes to tens of thousands of patients, but that fact does not lessen our responsibility to fully address the issues raised by these cases. We want to assure every provider whose patient is referred to Children’s that we remain dedicated to providing quality pediatric care at the highest level. Ultimately, the changes that are being made as a result of these cases will make this institution stronger and even safer.
