Neonatology at
South Shore Hospital
Because of the special relationship between Children’s Hospital
Boston and South
Shore Hospital in Weymouth, Mass., new mothers and their babies
in southeast Massachusetts now have a wide range of care available
to them close to home.
“The size, scope and quality of our obstetric and pediatric programs
at South Shore Hospital are unique among Massachusetts community
hospitals,” says Janet Lloyd, MD, South Shore
Hospital’s director of Neonatology. Those programs include a Level-II
Special Care Nursery and a new neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
The Special Care Nursery is one of only four in Massachusetts
that can offer continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) for
babies who require this level of respiratory support. In addition,
the nursery is staffed 24 hours a day by neonatologists who hold
dual appointments at Children’s and South Shore Hospital. The
staff also includes hospitalists, nurses, nurse practitioners,
social workers, and respiratory, physical and occupational therapists
essential to the unit’s expert care.
The 10-bed NICU at South Shore, which opens this fall, provides
additional respiratory support for newborns who need it, eliminating
the need to transfer some babies to Boston. Those infants who
do require mechanical ventilation or other advanced services can
be smoothly transferred to the Level-III NICU at Children’s. Often,
once these patients have been stabilized they can be re-admitted
to South Shore’s Special Care Nursery for convalescent care prior
to going home.
