Mark Fleming, MD, DPhil, has been appointed vice chairman of the Department of Pathology. Since 1998, he has led the hematopathology service at Children's Hospital Boston and at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and in 2005, he was appointed acting director for Surgical Pathology. In his new role, Dr. Fleming will work closely with Tucker Collins, MD, PhD, pathologist-in-chief, and other division leaders to implement the department's clinical strategy and assure effective clinical operations.

Arielle Mizrahi, MD, senior associate in Perioperative Anesthesia, was recently named clinical director of Children's Hospital Boston at Waltham's operating rooms.

Scott Dingeman, MD, assistant in Perioperative Anesthesia, was named assistant clinical director of Children's Hospital Boston at Waltham operating rooms.

John Mayer, MD, senior associate in Cardiovascular Surgery, was elected president of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS). Dr. Mayer has been involved with STS throughout his career, focusing on issues involving government relations and public affairs.

Wayne Lencer, MD, chief of Gastroenterology, has been named a Fellow of the American Gastroenterological Association, the nation's oldest medical society dedicated to disorders of the GI tract.

Kenneth Mandl, MD, MPH, assistant in Emergency Medicine, was elected to the American Society for Clinical Investigation, which represents more than 2,800 active physician-scientists who are at the bedside, research bench and blackboard.

Lois Smith, MD, PhD, associate in Ophthalmology, was one of six recipients of an award given by the Alcon Research Institute. Awardees are recognized for their outstanding research in ophthalmology and winners are awarded $100,000.

Brian Fligor, ScD, CCC-A, director of the Diagnostic Audiology Program, specializes in factors associated with hearing loss. He was named Active Advocate of the Year for 2007 by the American Academy of Audiology.

Scott Pomeroy, MD, PhD, neurologist-in-chief, is the recipient of the Daniel Drake Medal, the highest honor awarded by the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

Elizabeth Woods, MD, MPH, medical director of the Community Asthma Initiative, received an award from the Allergy and Asthma Foundation of America's New England Chapter for outstanding service to Boston's children with asthma and their families. In Dr. Woods' honor, Mayor Thomas Menino proclaimed Thursday, April 12 as Dr. Elizabeth Woods Day.
