Extending trauma expertise

By Janet M. Spellman, RN, NREMT-P Regional Trauma Clinical Nurse Specialist

As a Regional Trauma Clinical Nurse Specialist, I represent the Trauma Program at Children's Hospital Boston in our outreach to referring hospitals, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) providers and community organizations. My goal is to bring useful educational resources, injury prevention projects and trauma conferences to nursing, medicine, emergency medical services, public health and safety, injury prevention and public policy professionals.

We sponsor pediatric trauma and injury prevention programs for nurses from all disciplines and EMS professionals, as well as specialty programs designed for physicians.

Presentations include:

  • Assessment and management of pediatric multiple trauma
  • Management of head injuries in infants and children
  • Seasonal sports-related injuries in children
  • Stroke: rapid recognition and management of adults and children
  • Trauma rounds/case study review
  • Pediatric pain management protocol for advanced EMS professionals
  • Injury patterns indicative of child abuse
  • Transportation of the critically injured child

These programs can be presented on-site for referral hospitals and EMS providers, and all participants can earn continuing education credits.

The popular conference "Injuries to Children: From Minor to Major and Multiple Trauma,” will be held at Children's this fall and will provide nurses and EMS professionals across the state with the opportunity to hear Children's experts present lectures and cases on pediatric trauma. We've also developed a series of lecture materials on CD and video for nurses. All programs are approved for continuing education credit for nursing and all professional EMS levels. Physicians can also receive CME credit for the programs.
