Mentored clinical career study
in adolescent substance abuse
This study is to determine if drug testing helps kids who are trying not to use drugs or alcohol. Participation includes two questionnaires related to alcohol, drug and tobacco use; family and friends; sexual activity; school activity and self-esteem. Compensation will be provided for participants, including a two-hour parking pass, food voucher and $0.35 per mile in cash for travel will be provided. In addition, a gift certificate worth $25 will be given after each of the two assessments.
Eligibility: Patients may be eligible if they are between the ages of 12 and 21 years of age and meet the following criteria: enrolled in the Adolescent Substance Abuse Program at Children's, have used alcohol, marijuana or another drug two or more times in the last 30 days, are able to read and understand English, do not need to go into a hospital for treatment of an alcohol or drug problem, have insurance or are willing to pay for the laboratory expenses associated with drug testing and do not have a history of using inhalants to get high.

The epilepsy phenome/genome project
This groundbreaking research study, funded by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, is designed to better understand epilepsy. Participation in the study will take two-to-four hours and will include a blood sample and interviews. Compensation will be provided.
Eligibility: Patients may be eligible if they have epilepsy and also a sibling, parent or child with epilepsy. Participants may also have epilepsy due to infantile spasms, Lennox Gastaut syndrome, polymicrogyria or periventricular heterotopia.

Cerebral visual impairment in children born prematurely
The purpose of this study is to better understand vision problems that occur in some children who are born prematurely. Participants will be asked to take three types of tests, including a standard vision test, specialized tests that examine how the brain interprets what the eyes see and tests that measure visual behavior.
Eligibility: Children who were born between 2000 and 2004, who have healthy eyesight and who were born at full term are eligible for this study.
