Children's Hospital Boston is thrilled to announce that it has been awarded Magnet status, an
exclusive designation developed by the American Nurses Credentialing Center to recognize
health care organizations that exemplify
nursing excellence.
Magnet certification ensures that nursing
delivers excellent patient outcomes, that nurses have a high level of job satisfaction and that there is nursing involvement in data collection and
decision-making in patient care delivery. Since the designation's establishment 20 years ago, studies have shown that Magnet hospitals have better patient outcomes than non-Magnet hospitals. Currently, there are about 275 Magnet-certified hospitals nation-wide-which is less than 5
percent of hospitals and only five in all
of Massachusetts.
The process of applying for Magnet status
was thorough and lengthy, and began with the
completion and submission of a 15-inch-thick document weighing nearly 40 pounds that addressed every aspect of nursing at Children's. In November, three members of the Magnet Recognition Program conducted a site visit
to verify the information included in the
Magnet document.
Having Magnet status underscores the fact that Children's has a world-class nursing organization that provides quality patient care and nursing excellence and produces innovations that improve professional nursing practice. It also provides
consumers with the ultimate benchmark to
measure the quality of care that they can
expect to receive.
