"Intelligent history"flags domestic violence

goldmann_sandora

Domestic abuse often goes undiagnosed until too late—yet, in retrospect, medical records often contain subtle clues that physicians lack the time to decipher. Now, researchers from the Children’s Hospital Informatics Program and the Division of Emergency Medicine show that tapping electronic health records could help clinicians spot abuse early. Ben Reis, PhD, with colleagues Kenneth Mandl, MD, MPH, and Isaac Kohane, MD, PhD, built a predictive model based on six years of anonymized insurance claims for hospitalizations and ED visits involving more than 500,000 adults. Variables associated with domestic abuse included a higher number of annual visits, certain mental health diagnoses and visits for injury.
