Children's Division of Sports Medicine has
begun a weekly walk-in clinic to treat children
and adolescents with urgent injuries due to
participation in sports or the performing arts.
Every Wednesday from 2 to 5 p.m., athletes,
dancers or performers with injuries requiring immediate care can call the Sports Medicine Appointment Line at 617-355-3501 to be triaged into urgent appointment slots.
The following recommendations are part of
the American College of Sports Medicine's guidelines on preventing sports injuries in
children and adolescents.
Fitness exercises should be included in children's and adolescents' training routines, rather than devoting all of each training
session to the development of specific skills.
-
Training sessions should include warm-up and
cool-down periods.
-
Young people participating in organized sports
should be supervised to ensure compliance
with safety rules.
-
Child and adolescent athletes should engage
in age- and skill-appropriate weight training, but only with knowledgeable instruction and
adequate adult supervision.
-
Coaches need to monitor the intensity of
training, the length of the daily training period
and any changes in specific skill techniques.
