Christopher A. Walsh, MD, PhD Christopher A. Walsh, MD, PhD, has been appointed chief of the Division of Genetics at Children's Hospital Boston. Dr. Walsh received both his PhD and MD degrees from the University of Chicago and then trained in Neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital, including a year as Chief Resident. Since 1995, he has directed the Division of Neurogenetics at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC). He is currently the Bullard Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Investigator. Walsh will continue to maintain his laboratory presence and HHMI affiliation at BIDMC.
Mary Ellen Avery, MD Mary Ellen Avery, MD, physician-in-chief emeritus and the Thomas Morgan Rotch distinguished professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School, has received the 2005 Alfred I. duPont Award for Excellence in Children's Health Care by Nemours. The award recognizes her discovery that respiratory distress syndrome in premature babies is caused by a lack of surfactant and that giving them extra surfactant prevents and treats the condition. The award acknowledges the delivery of safe, high-quality care to patients and supports individuals who advocate for improving the health care of children.
Leonard Zon, MD, director of Children's Stem Cell/Developmental Biology Program, has been elected to the Institute of Medicine. Dr. Zon is one of just 64 new members chosen this year. His selection is a tribute to his stature as one of the nation's leading stem cell researchers and deep understanding of the social, ethical and political issues surrounding stem cell research. This appointment will enable him to extend the contribution he has already made to shaping public policy on this controversial and important research issue.
