This month, the Children’s Hospital Ophthalmology Foundation—the professional corporation of Children’s Hospital Boston’s Department of Ophthalmology—and the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary established a formal relationship in patient care, creating one of the most comprehensive pediatric ophthalmology networks in
the country.
As part of the agreement, Children’s ophthalmologists will provide pediatric eye care at Mass. Eye and Ear locations, giving patients easier access to a team of ophthalmologists and subspecialists. "By bringing together the most highly trained specialists with state-of-the-art treatments and equipment, we’re ensuring even greater access to the world’s best pediatric eye care," says David Hunter, MD, PhD, chief of Ophthalmology at Children’s.

Rankings for U.S.News & World Report’s "America’s Best Children’s Hospitals" for its August edition have been released. Unlike in previous years, this edition does not rank the overall institutions. Instead, it identifies an honor roll of 10 hospitals that rank in all 10 specialties. Children’s was one of only two hospitals to score in the top 5 in all 10 specialties.
Children’s is first in Heart and Ear Surgery, Neurology, Neurosurgery and Orthopedics. We are second in Cancer, Diabetes/ Endocrine Disorders and Urology; third in Digestive Disorders and Neonatal Care; fourth in Respiratory Disorders; and fifth in Kidney Disorders.
Children’s has been named one of the Boston Business Journal’s 2009 "Best Places to Work." Honorees were announced in May and additional information appeared in its
June issue.

Children’s hematologist Alan Michelson, MB, BS, recently launched the Center for Platelet Research Studies, a multidisciplinary center that will perform basic, translational and clinical research on platelets of patients with thrombotic and bleeding disorders. The center will study platelet function and initiate new clinical trials.

Children’s Myelodysplasia Clinic has been selected as the recipient of the Outstanding Service Provider Award by the Spina Bifida Association of America. The award recognizes how Children’s multidisciplinary services (orthopedic, neurological and urological) ensures that patients’ social, psychological and medical needs are met. The clinic provides services to about 300 patients per year.
