transplant from partially-matched donors
Eva Guinan, MD, of Children's and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, is enrolling children and adults who need a stem cell transplant for acute leukemia or myelodysplasia, but have an incompletely matched family stem-cell donor. The transplant procedure will combine two novel strategies to improve recovery of the immune system while avoiding graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). Patients will first receive donor stem cells that have been purified to remove specific immune cells likely to trigger GVHD. If the cells engraft without complication, patients will receive donor immune cells pretreated to dampen their immune response to the patient's antigens.
