This map is updated every 15 minutes as patients enter data. The green states have average hemoglobin values of 7 percent; yellow states, 7 to 8 percent; red states, greater than 8 percent. |
Children’s Hospital Boston has partnered with TuDiabetes.org, an online social network for people with diabetes, to create a web application called TuAnalyze. Launched in May, the application invites members to securely submit their hemoglobin A1c values as part of a “data donation drive” whose goal is to map diabetes metrics across the United States. (In this map, the color of each state reflects whether the average A1c is within the recommended range.)
Developed by researchers in the Children’s Hospital Informatics Program, led by Kenneth D. Mandl, MD, MPH, TuAnalyze is based on the Indivo personally controlled health record. Users can choose to have their A1c values aggregated and used for academic research, online charts and maps, and, if they wish, displayed for anyone who can see their TuDiabetes profile page. “We anticipate that participation in this sharing of medical information will encourage individuals in their own diabetes management,” says TuDiabetes founder, Manny Hernandez.
