Department of Cardiac Surgery

The Department of Cardiac Surgery is proud to introduce Frank Pigula, MD, who joins us as a senior associate in Cardiac Surgery. Dr. Pigula was a Senior Fellow in Cardiovascular Surgery at Children's from 1997 to 1998. He then went on to become the chief of Pediatric Cardiothorasic Surgery at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. In the laboratory, Dr. Pigula developed a technique for regional cerebral perfusion in an effort to avoid circulatory arrest particularly in neonates with aortic arch hypoplasia. He successfully took these techniques to the clinical arena where this method of cerebral perfusion has now become widely accepted and is utilized by many major pediatric cardiac centers in North America.

Dr. Pigula's research efforts now focus on developing techniques for fetal cardiac surgery, which complements the fetal intervention program currently organized by James Lock, MD and Audrey Marshall, MD in the Department of Cardiology. Dr. Pigula can be reached at (617) 355-1914.
