Joshua Nagler

Man no face
Academic Title:
Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine, Harvard Medical School
Dr. Nagler is involved in clinical as well as educational research. His clinical research interest aims at improving emergent advanced airway management in pediatrics. He is involved with studies comparing how new technologies such as videolaryngoscopy can improve success rates and decrease the risk of complications during pediatric intubation. In addition, he has studied various pedagogic strategies to improve intubation performance by emergency providers. Finally, he has investigated risk factors for misplaced endotracheal tubes in pediatrics, to inform strategies to help providers avoid related complications.
Dr.Nagler's medical education research has focused on the integration of information systems to improve clinical training within pediatrics. He has published work demonstrating the development of an automated system that integrates electronic information available through a patient tracking system in combination with the electronic health record to be used for educational initiatives. In addition, he has modeled how this tool can be used to guide training in pediatric emergency medicine, as well as to improve the evaluation process for medical students. He currently completed a randomized control trial investigating the benefit of utilizing an electronic platform to deliver educational material to rotating residents. He recently presented findings from a randomized controlled trial investigating the impact of integration of intubation videos of patients into an airway curriculum for residents. The work identified improved procedural performance by those trainees who received video-enhanced instruction.

About the Researcher

He is the Director of the Fellowship as well as the Director of Medical Education for the Division of Emergency Medicine. He teaches in a number of national Pediatric and Advanced Airway Management Courses, and served as the Associate Editor for the 7th Edition of Fleisher and Ludwig’s Textbook of Pediatric Emergency Medicine, and as a guest editor for Clinical Pediatric Emergency Medicine. He also holds national educational leadership positions through the American Academy of Pediatrics including a teaching faculty position at the AAP NCE and PREP EM courses and as a member of the editorial board for PREP EMed.
