Research Overview

The major focus of my research has been on understanding aspects of neonatal pulmonary physiology in animal models and human infants and then using this knowledge to develop new approaches to treatment of neonatal lung disease. Specific examples include participation in early clinical trials of exogenous surfactant for treatment of respiratory distress syndrome, development of the technique of high frequency ventilation and understanding its physiologic implications, clinical trials of inhaled glucocorticoids for prevention of bronchopulmonary dysplasia, and participation in a trial of nasal intermittent positive pressure ventilation for preterm infants. Recently I have been involved in a wide range of clinical trials in preterm infants.

About Ivan D. Franz

My training in neonatology started at McGill with Mary Ellen Avery and in pulmonary physiology with Dr. Joseph Milic-Emili. I then moved to Harvard to continue working with Dr. Avery and Dr. Jere Mead at the Harvard School of Public Health. I spent several years as associate director of the Harvard Joint Program in Neonatology then moved to Tufts to direct the neonatology program there.
