Research Overview

As Director of the Developmental Endoscopy Research Lab at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Dr. Matthes is coordinating multidisciplinary research projects as a collaboration of anesthesiologists, surgeons and gastroenterologists. Dr. Matthes obtained a summa cum laude degree Ph.D. in gastroenterology in the field of medical simulation and training. His current research foci include: natural orifice translumenal endoscopic surgery (NOTES), simulator team training in interventional endoscopy and laparoscopy, regional anesthetic options to supplement minimal access surgical procedures and airway management. Dr. Matthes' research group pioneered several new procedures, including peroral endoscopic transgastric distal pancreatectomy and transvaginal nephrectomy.
