Research Overview

Understand the roles of cytochrome P450 (CYP) epoxygenases 2J2 and its polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) metabolites in retinopathy of premature (ROP) and diabetic retinopathy (DR) using oxygen-induced and streptozotocin-induced retinopathy mouse models. Determine complex mechanisms of action with a quantitative comparative transcriptional profiling technique and to develop new surrogate markers for ROP and DR, which cause blindness characterized by inflammatory components with late neovascularization. Identify novel inhibitors of CYP2C8, which is induced during retinopathy and whose PUFA metabolites regulate neovascularization in oxygen-induced retinopathy. Inhibition of CYP2C8 presents a novel target for retinopathy treatment.

About the Researcher

Dr. Yan Gong is currently a postdoctoral research fellow in Dr. Lois E. Smith Lab at the department of Ophthalmology in Boston Children’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School. His research interest is the basic mechanisms of angiogenesis and translational research in ophthalmology. His current work focuses on the molecular pathways that regulate pathological angiogenesis in proliferative retinopathy. He obtained his doctoral training on Molecular and Cellular Biology in the Graduate School of Biomedical Science and Engineering in the University of Maine. His study focused on the effect of Sprouty proteins on endothelial cell behaviors during angiogenesis with the direction of Dr. Robert E. Friesel at Maine Medical Center Research Institute.
