Research:

For my Ph.D. I worked on the mechanism and the function of calcium oscillations in T lymphocytes. I found that oscillations are probably generated by the feedback between unusual calcium channels that are activated by depletion of the internal stores and the internal stores themselves. I also found that different calcium patterns can activate different transcriptional pathways, showing for the first time that the pattern of calcium fluxes actually contains information that can be decoded by the nucleus of a cell. I spent most of my time in graduate school building The Beast which was a machine to generate calcium oscillations of arbitrary frequencies and amplitudes in the cytoplasm of single cells. I am an expert miniature plumber.
