Purpose: The purpose of this research study is to better understand vision problems that occur in some children who are born prematurely. We want to compare information between children who were born prematurely and children who were born at full term. There are three types of tests that will help us understand the difference in visual ability between these two groups of children. These tests will study the pathways of vision from the eye to the brain. These tests include a standard vision test and some specialized tests that examine how the brain interprets what the eyes see. Three of these, called visual evoked potential (VEP) tests, use electrodes to measure your child’s brain wave activity while he or she watches TV. The third type of test measures visual behavior; one involves placing a letter in a mailbox and the other involves identifying pictures of animals. We think this research will help us understand more about how and where the brain processes visual information. |
