| Find a Clinical Trial |
| Principal Investigator: | Sarah deFerranti |
| Trial Description: | This study will evaluate the efficacy of two heart healthy diets in the treatment of adolescents with some heart disease risk factors associated with being overweight, such as high blood pressure, pre-diabetes, and cholesterol problems. We hope to determine which diet improves these risk factors more. Participant in the study will receive most meals and snacks, as well as daily multivitamins in an amount designed to induce weight loss. Parking or travel expenses for each visit to the hospital will be reimbursed, and a gift certificate for iTunes will be given during participation in the study ($10). An iPod shuffle will be given at the completion of the study. A gym membership, either at the Children's UMASS Boston site designed specifically for children, or at a site close to home to the amount of up to $300 will be provided. In addition, three assessments for cardiovascular risk factors will be done and the results will be provided to participants and their primary care provider. |
| Recruitment Info: | Children between the ages of 8 and 17 years old, with elevated BMI and two or more cardiovascular risk factors, but no other major medical issues, who are willing and eager to follow a healthy diet may be eligible. Parking, iPod shuffle and gym membership are offered as compensation during the course of the study. |
