| Find a Clinical Trial |
| Principal Investigator: | Stavroula Osganian |
| Trial Description: | This study will evaluate the efficacy of Lovaza, a purified supplement form of omega-3 fatty acids, compared to placebo on the treatment of adolescents with elevated triglycerides. High triglycerides have been associated with an increased risk for heart disease in adults, and with a risk for pancreatitis, or inflammation of the pancreas, a serious complication of high triglycerides and other medical conditions. We hope to determine whether Lovaza improves triglycerides more than a placebo. Participant in the study will receive Lovaza or a placebo pill, as well as dietary advice on how to lower their triglyceride levels. Parking or travel expenses for each visit to the hospital will be reimbursed, and a gift certificates for Best Buy will be given during participation in the study ($100 per visit; 4 study visits total). In addition, results of tests for cardiovascular risk factors will be done and the results will be provided to participants and their primary care provider. |
| Recruitment Info: | We are seeking 10-19 year old adolescents with fasting triglycerides from 150 mg/dl to 1000 mg/dl. |
