Heung Bae Kim, MD

Heung Bae Kim's research focuses on developing and testing new alternatives to existing surgical procedures. He originated the serial transverse enteroplasty, or STEP, procedure for short bowel syndrome, in which the bowel is stapled into v-shapes on alternating sides, decreasing its width and increasing its length. The procedure is currently used in instances where standard surgery to correct short-bowel syndrome is not feasible. In addition to the STEP procedure, Dr. Kim has several areas of interest in experimental and clinical transplantation.
