Research Overview

Dr. Burns is Chief of Critical Care at Boston Children's Hospital where the central focus of his academic work has been the development of innovations in medical education to advance the care of critically ill children.

He was the founding director in 2000 of the Boston Children's Hospital Simulator Program, the first in-hospital, dedicated pediatric critical care simulator suite in the United States. This entailed raising over $5 million in extramural support to build and expand the simulator suite in the ICU, and creating the academic curriculum and administrative structure to support and train multiple specialty disciplines in high fidelity simulation. This program has now expanded beyond Boston Children's Hospital to over a dozen collaborations across the globe, and was the first to use 3-D printing to simulate surgical procedures prior the actual operation: http://simpeds.org.

Dr. Burns is also the founding director of an online community of clinicians sharing best practices from all resource settings around the world through innovative collaboration and digital learning technologies. Entitled OPENPediatrics.org, this is a peer-reviewed, open-access, multi-lingual knowledge exchange application currently in use in over 132 countries and 2000 hospitals on 6 continents. Dr. Burns leads a research collaboration team comprised of faculty colleagues from MIT and Harvard who are experts on digital learning and technology, and with over $15 million in extramural support to develop, grow, and sustain this global effort. Beyond our research team, this is fundamentally a collaboration of over 100 international subject matter experts on the care of the critically ill child who have come together to share their expertise to colleagues across the world. OPENPediatrics.org has been widely highlighted in the media over the past several years and has won numerous education and technology awards: http://openpediatrics.org
