Research Overview

Dr. Burns is Chief of Critical Care and is currently working on two projects involving the improvement of care in the critically ill child.

One is a multiyear project of the Division of Critical Care Medicine at Children’s Hospital Boston to promote quality improvement in the ICUs through medical simulation, and enhanced technology. The objective of this project has been to identify and implement emerging technologies to promote more effective and efficient pediatric critical care.

To date this has included the development and implementation of an ICU based simulation suite (with control room and debriefing room) to enhance multidisciplinary training and quality improvement; the first implementation of a portable CT scanner designed for the pediatric patient from infancy to adolescents, and now expanding to other brain imaging and monitor devices that we are adapting for use in the critically ill pediatric patient; and the implementation of a difficult airway cart for the pediatric patient; and the development and implementation of a remote imaging and video-conferencing program, currently providing education and case consultation advice across four continents.

The second project involves the design and implementation of a website, in partnership with IBM, to provide interactive educational resources and networking capability to practitioners of pediatric intensive care across the globe. The overall objective of this project is to develop and implement a comprehensive, continuously updated and peer reviewed, website dedicated to providing multimedia educational resources to physicians and nurses across the globe on care of the critically ill child.

In partnership with IBM and collaborators from the Harvard School of Education, this website is specially designed to capture the principles of adult learning theory and enhance interactive learning. The website will include video-based teaching on best practices from internationally recognized physician and nursing experts; protocols on best practices; simulators and avatars for interactive learning of actual practice; and an on-line question and answer portal so that clinicians around the world can share and exchange insights with colleagues both near and far.
