About Us

The Translational Neuroscience Center (TNC) was launched by Boston Children’s pioneering physicians and biomedical scientists in Developmental Medicine, Genetics and Genomics, Neurobiology, Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry. The TNC has established new ties between laboratory researchers and clinicians who care for children at the hospital (ranked #1 by U.S.News & World Report in Neurology and Neurosurgery since 2009); developed new shared resources for efficient translation of discoveries from bench to bedside; and promoted cross-fertilization of ideas to maximize research value.

The TNC leadership team is directed by neurologist Mustafa Sahin, MD, PhD, and includes co-directors, Lisa Prock, MD, MPH, (Developmental Medicine) and Robin Kleiman, PhD, (Preclinical Research) working together with the distinguished TNC Executive Committee.

Strengthening the hospital’s existing relationships with academic, government, and corporate collaborators, as well as disease-based foundations, are the TNC's initiatives. By clarifying and enriching Boston Children’s resources available to pursue translational research in the faculty’s core areas of expertise, which include autism spectrum disorders, musculoskeletal disorders, pain/regeneration and neuro-oncology; the TNC can facilitate the development of new interdisciplinary collaborations to improve early diagnosis, accelerate drug discovery and generate additional novel strategies for reducing the burden of pediatric nervous system disorders for patients and families in Boston, as well as across the U.S. and the globe.

Our Vision

To improve the lives of children with brain disorders via timely and efficient translation of scientific research through collaboration among Boston Children's Hospital's exceptional investigators and in partnership with the external research community.

Our Mission
  • Accelerate the translation of research discoveries into new cures for pediatric nervous system disorders.
  • Develop effective new strategies for disease prevention and treatment through collaborations among Children's Hospital's world-renowned basic scientists in partnership with the external drug discovery community.
  • Train future leaders about critical components of pediatric translational neuroscience.
  • Share new models of interdisciplinary translational medicine in pediatric neuroscience with local, national and international collaborators.

Our Resources
The unique environment at Boston Children’s Hospital provides unprecedented opportunities for the development of new diagnostic tools and therapies. The center’s current cores and facilities include a Biorepository Core, Human Neuron Differentiation Service, Clinical Research and Regulatory Affairs Service, Human Neurobehavioral Core Service, Cellular Assay Development and Screening Core and Mouse Neurodevelopmental Behavior Core, with many more cores in development.

TNC members at Boston Children’s and their collaborators have access to a broad range of resources and expertise throughout the hospital, including:

  • Diverse populations of well-characterized patients with brain disorders
  • Genetics and genomics capabilities
  • MRI and radiology expertise
  • Bioinformatics
  • Tissue banks
  • Animal models
  • Stem cell platforms
  • Electrophysiology
  • Cognitive neuroscience laboratories
  • Deep knowledge of rare diseases, both clinical and scientific
  • Top clinical and basic scientists
  • The largest hospital-based neurodevelopmental research enterprise in the United States
