Background and Research Interests
I received my B.Sc. in Biology (1999) at the University of Jaén (Spain), and a B.Sc. in Biochemistry (2001) at the University of Granada (Spain). I obtained my PhD in Pharmacology (2006), under the supervision of Prof. Baeyens and Dr. del Pozo in the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Granada.

As part of my doctoral thesis, I studied the binding properties of several drugs to sigma-1 receptors (Cobos et al., 2005, 2006 and 2007). After finishing my PhD studies, I continued my research activities in the group of Prof. Baeyens, studying the involvement of sigma-1 receptors in pain. We found that sigma-1 receptors appear to be a promising new target for the treatment of mechanical allodynia (pain induced by normally innocuous stimulation) (Entrena et al., 2009a and b).

I joined Prof. Clifford Woolf’s lab in May 2009 as a postdoctoral fellow. My current research interests focus on: (i) identifying genes of interest that play a major role in the development of neuropathic pain (together with Dr. Michael Costigan); (ii) studying the involvement of heat shock protein (Hsp) 27 (together with Dr. Eddie Ma) and the transcription factor ATF-3 (together with Dr. Rhona Seijffers) in functional recovery after peripheral nerve injury; and (iii) developing new behavioral phenotyping tools for the study of chronic (inflammatory and neuropathic) pain and functional recovery after peripheral nerve injury.
