Sherin Shaaban, M.D., Ph.D., Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Sherin joined the Engle lab in February 2010 as a postdoctoral research fellow. She is an Assistant Lecturer in Ophthalmology at the Faculty of Medicine, Mansoura University in Egypt. She received her medical degree and then earned a M.Sc. in Ophthalmology, both from Mansoura University. Following her clinical training, she pursued a Ph.D. at Okayama University in Japan. This degree was awarded in 2009 for clinical genetics research directed at determining susceptibility loci for comitant strabismus using genetic linkage analysis. In the Engle lab, Sherin is using a variety of genetic approaches to elucidate the genetic variants underlying the common forms of strabismus. Sherin will also be working to identify the genetic causes of isolated congenital ptosis. We hypothesize that ptosis is one of the CCDDs and that gene defects might alter the development of the central caudal motor neurons of the oculomotor nucleus and/or the targeting of their axons to the levator palpebrae superioris, which elevates the eyelid.
