Congenital Cranial Dysinnervation Disorders (CCDD) clinic information

The Congenital Cranial Dysinnervation Disorders (CCDDs) are a set of neurological disorders affecting one or more of the 12 cranial nerves of the body. The cranial nerves control bodily functions that include movement of the eyes, transmission of visual information, smell, facial sensation, facial expression, blinking, hearing, balance, taste, chewing and swallowing. Ocular CCDD’s include CFEOM (congenital fibrosis of extraocular muscles), 3rd nerve palsy, 4th nerve palsy, 6th nerve palsy, Moebius syndrome, Duane syndrome, Brown syndrome, ocular synkinesis syndromes and Horizontal gaze palsy with progressive scoliosis.

Dr Elizabeth Engle (Neurology) and Dr David Hunter (Ophthalmology) hold a combined outpatient clinic in which they evaluate individuals (children and adults) who have, or may have, an ocular CCDD. CCDD clinic patients will undergo ophthalmological and neurological consultation. The clinic is held monthly in the Ophthalmology Department on Fegan 4 of the main Children’s Hospital Boston campus.
