The Scientific Advisory Committee, SAC, is composed of a group of prominent experts from variety of fields charged with examining research activities, providing guidance and recommendations for future work, and rendering its professional judgment about the quality and importance of contributions from research programs of clinical departments at Boston Children’s with a particular focus on laboratory research.
This year the committee is chaired by Zena Werb, PhD and includes 15 scientists from non-profit research institutes and medical schools around the country, all internationally prominent in their fields. The Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine is one of 5 departments/ divisions whose programs and activities are being reviewed. Our department’s previous review took place in 2005.
Under the Committee’s direction, a rigorous analysis of comparative publication productivity among anesthesia departments at peer children’s hospitals (including CHOP, Cincinnati, LA Children’s, Atlanta Children’s and Texas Children’s) was carried out. The methodology included Pub MED queries using identical search terms for each children’s hospital anesthesia department and quantitation of that department’s publications over the past 11 years.
Included in the queries were basic science journals, general medical journals, general pediatric journals and leading anesthesia, critical care and pain journals. The results are shown in graphic form below.
