Harvard Pediatric Health Services Research Fellowship Program
Since 1994, the Harvard Pediatric Health Services Research (HSR) Fellowship Program has excelled at training a new generation of investigators whose work is defining and addressing critical gaps in child health services research and the provision of primary care for children. Health services research examines key issues such as access, quality, outcomes and cost-effectiveness of care.
Our Goal
The principal goal of our two-year program is to develop expert investigators whose research will fundamentally improve the capacity of the U.S. healthcare system to meet the needs of children and families, including socio-economically disadvantaged and minority populations. The diverse research projects conducted by our faculty and fellows share the goal of improving pediatric care along the six dimensions of quality articulated by the Institute of Medicine -care that is safe, effective, timely, efficient, patient centered, and equitable.
Program highlights
Graduates of the HSR Fellowship Program have become successful independent health services researchers in leading pediatric centers. Our success is a result of many factors, including:

  • a highly structured curriculum and research environment;
  • personalized mentoring;
  • a collaborative environment;
  • access to expert methodologists and to the vast, multidisciplinary resources and faculty of the Harvard institutions.
Fellowship Learning Opportunities
  • Individualized mentorship on a minimum of two studies.
  • Coursework at the Harvard School of Public Health leading to an MPH in Clinical Effectiveness.
  • Program seminars, including guest and faculty presentations, research skills sessions, discussions of pertinent publications and works-in-progress sessions.
  • 80-90% research, 10-20% clinical.
Collaboration across Harvard institutions
The HSR Fellowship Program is a collaborative program operating across three research sites: Children's Hospital Boston, where the program is based; MassGeneral Hospital for Children; and the Department of Ambulatory Care and Prevention (DACP) of Harvard Medical School and Harvard Pilgrim Health Care. The collaborative structure of the program provides fellows with access to the broad and deep resources of the Harvard institutions.
